As our letter suggested, we hope to co-create this course with you. This is not the first time any of us have taught the literature of our country, but it is the first time we've taught it in the context of myth. To that end, we ask for your patience, your interest, your effort, and your help.

There are three of us teaching the course. Most of you will have two of us as teachers, which means you'll change at the semester. To that end, we're going to try to keep things as consistent as possible between us, so that no matter which teacher you have 2nd semester, you can rest assured you all had similar exposure to and experiences with the material and ideas. However, since we all know time isn't really linear, and neither are ideas, expect things to change slightly from the syllabi below throughout the semester, as we discover things about ourselves, each other, the texts, our American myths. We'll need some wiggle room, especially on the smaller stuff. In any case, here is the tentative broadstroke of ideas and texts (once we discover links to useful resources, we'll add them!):

What is myth? What can it do?

Myths are stories individuals and communities create that help them make sense of their world and defend their own needs, beliefs, and values.	Myths reveal things about our ids (our human needs, desires, and dreams), about our egos (who we are in the present), and our superegos (our ideas about right and wrong).	Myths connect us to our roots, help us live in the present, and guide us toward our future.
Myths are like doors or portals to imaginative worlds (think Alice in Wonderland).	Myths describe our individual and community hero journeys.	Myths establish balance in our world (or at least in our minds).
Myths create big ideas, metaphors, and symbols for us to live by.	Myths establish who's in power and who's not, who's in and who's out.	What is your definition of 'myth'? What is your definition of 'American myth'? What are your own 'myths'?

American Myth Yearbook (The Crucible)

As we finish reading our first play together (in class, on our own, viewing it), I invite you to

choose 5 characters
describe each in your own words (6-8 sentences). Consider their emotions, their beliefs, their actions, what they say, etc. Also consider, if you'd like, your own reactions to them.
cast each character with an actor or actress, another similar character, a sports figure, a political figure, someone newsworthy, etc.
then describe why that person would be perfect for that role (6-8 sentences).

I've included an example on the Reverend Samuel Parris page. And Drew K. and Rachel B. have good examples up on some of the pages, too. Check them out!

Suggestion: Write your descriptions out on paper or in Word first, making sure everything looks the way you want it to look. Then transfer it to the posting. This way, your writing will be more solid AND you won't duplicate exactly what someone else has said.

For fun: You may also add pictures of these choices next to the one I've already included at the top of each character's page. All you have to do is click EASY EDIT, place your cursor, click PHOTO, upload your photo, then resize it with the buttons. Fun, huh?

Answering these kinds of questions will be central to how each of us individually and each class as a community responds to the course. (In fact, the last sentence could be said to refer to two major American myths already!) In order to build a shared understanding of the concept of "myth" so that we can build a shared understanding of American "myth" over the next year, we invite each of you to share your ideas in the Discussion Forum below.

Final Assessment: What Have I Learned?

Remember the end of August 2009?

Yeah, me, too. It was warm. That's all I remember. Just that and your new faces, flabbergasted that I was pinching dirt out of an envelope and eating it. Back then, many of you had no experience with "myth" at all, let alone "American myth." Some of you had some prior knowledge and experience, some had narrow ideas ("It's all about how things come to be," "It's all tall tales from the Greeks," "American myth is about Paul Bunyan and stuff"), and some had a pretty good footing to begin the semester.

No matter what footing you were on in August, you've all taken some steps this semester. Many of you blazed your own trails without looking back; some of you puttered about waiting to see what you'd encounter; some of you strayed from the path and ended up lost, at least temporarily. I'm interested in where you are now.

I'm inviting you, as part of your final assessment, to write a letter to your second semester teacher about what you've learned this semester about

myth

myth-changing

Secondarily, you may have also learned things about

your beliefs and values and interests
your learning style
your strengths and weaknesses
your classmates
your teacher

Your letter should somehow compare what you understood about American myth (and other things) at the beginning of the semester AND what you understand now. The purpose is for me to see how much of what I've taught has made an impact and for you to inform your next teacher about what you're coming with. I'm not interested in the facts that you know. I'm interested in the ideas that you've learned and that you'll take with you throughout your schooling and your personal life.

Your letter should represent your best writing effort--with ideas, examples, and explanations, with spell-check and proofreading. It should be typed, double-spaced, and signed by you. It should be presented neatly.

To receive an A+, you will want to shoot for 3 pages.
To receive an A, minimum 2 pages.
B, 1 page.
C, 3/4 page.
D, 1/2 page.
F, less than 1/2 page OR no page whatsoever (Anyone failing to take me up on my invitation will fail the course!)

(Of course, a detailed, stylish, interesting 2-pager may still be eligible for an A+!)

Section 11. Read Whitman's "Song of Myself" Section 11, the "28 bathers" section. Write or type 1/2 page (minimum) describing how the themes of Whitman we've discussed so far are evident in this section of his poem. Be prepared to share your observations with the class.
Inaugural address. Read the full transcript of President Barack Obama's Inaugual Address. Look for examples of American myths. When you find one (something you learned from 1st semester or are learning from Whitman), underline it in the text and write a short note about it in the margin next to it (describe what American myth you're detecting). Go to the home page for some good definitions of myth (especially the one describing it as any big idea, belief, or value we have as people, as Americans--and the stories we tell to defend those things) or visit the American Myth Flag page to see some of the myths we uncovered 1st semester.
EXTRA CREDIT: Read the poem that Elizabeth Alexander recited at the inauguration, "Praise Song for the Day." Do something that makes you think and that'll make me think: Reflect, respond, analyze, write your own poem. Be creative!

Letter to Students

Welcome to the online raft, our own class wiki!

Dear American Myth students,

We have two stories for you.

First, in Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the young narrator Huck discovers that the river liberates him from the constraints of the land-dwellers, represented by his strict aunt, his abusive father, and community after community of chaos. On his raft, whose dimensions are 12 feet by 16 feet, he and the runaway slave Jim create their own world, one in which white and black, youth and experience, faith and superstition, racism and acceptance coincide and coexist. Huck decides that if being on this 12x16 raft with Jim is going to get him sent to hell, then "All right, then, I'll go to hell." He undoes his learned racism and undergoes a paradigm shift. That's 192 square feet of change.

The 12x16 raft (or a 12x16 curriculum) is a safe space, in which Huck and Jim (or students and teachers) can co-create and negotiate. It is when only one group creates (teachers delivering curriculum, students regurgitating the teacher's delivery) that animosity is born, when boredom thrives, when the potential thrill of learning is stifled, and when no one risks anything. Students and teachers come from all kinds of backgrounds, with all kinds of identities, skills, talents, and interests. A classroom should be a safe space for all learners (including the teacher) to co-exist.

E.W. Kemble, 1884 edition

Second, in Walden, Henry David Thoreau wonders why so many of us lead "lives of quiet desperation," always working,
sweating, toiling, rarely with any purpose or end in mind. He experimented with happiness, purpose, and simplicity by building a small hut at Walden Pond. The hut was only 10 feet by 15 feet, but he found joy in the very act of building his own dwelling and living "deliberately," not desperately. For two years, he demanded answers from his world:

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life living is so dear...I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily...as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms."

That's 150 square feet of living. A 10x15 hut (or a 10x15 classroom), then, is a place where we should be able to ask and answer:

How can we alleviate our quiet desperation?

How can we build our own huts?

How can we ask questions and demand answers from our world?

How can we live deliberately and suck out all the marrow of life?

This wiki website will be our central meeting place, our online 12x16/10x15 space to plan, to share, to discuss texts, and to work outside of class and between classes. We will invite you to join the site and participate regularly in the discussions. We look forward to co-learning with you!

Q. What if I am already a member from last semester?
A. That's cool. Don't worry about changing your username/password. However, if you CAN, then create a new username that looks like the one above. If the site tells you that the name already exists and that you have to choose something different, try first initial/full last name/mods (for example, JDonovan1314). If it asks you for another e-mail address, and you don't have one, then I'd suggest creating a Google Mail account, which you can access from any computer at school (www.gmail.com).

Q. What if I want to join multiple class websites? Can I use the same username?
A. As far as we know, yes. So if you want to join the Exploding Pens website or your American Government website, you should be able to use the same username.
