ok now ive been thinkin long and hard about this....i think the mountains are the olympic mountains located in the olympic national park of washington state and i believe the picture is up here becasue in mythology there are always heros and obsticles like we say in the journey of the hero.i belive mr.I is the "hero" so to say i mean hes on cruches and still ready to conquere his obsticle the mountain as seemingly impossible and difficult as it may be to the average person but a hero is never just an average person.maybe to start off but they always end far above average,in this case the long road to the mountain to me symbolizes the long journey to reach what the hero must face cause its never an easy one and the cruches are an addition to the obsticle.his "handicap' or weakness, but even with that weakness he takes the long path of a hero to conquere the mountain. and once that is done he may not lose his weakness but he will in fact become stronger. (all in a metaphorical sense) :) 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I love it when a student says, unashamedly, "I've been thinking long and hard about this"!

Your comments about me being the hero are quite insightful. What's funny is that the summer I left for Milwaukee from Seattle, I was playing some mad tennis against my mom and dad, who were doubling up on me. I was running around, whacking the ball, acing my serves, la la la. But when one of their balls landed behind me, I walked casually to retrieve it, my feet brushed over a THIN patch of gravel, more like DUST, and my ankle simply gave way beneath me, twisting completely inward. That's all it took: one little patch of gravel. I spent the rest of the summer on crutches (not to mention the fact that my mother totalled my Jetta that June, too, so I wouldn't have been able to drive anyways, which is one of my favorite pastimes!).

We only just began reading John Winthrop's speech to the Puritans on the boat, but we got this far: it'll only take ONE slip-up, ONE straying from the ideals that they believe in, and they'll be screwed, pardon my french. That's all it took for me to ruin my summer--except, as you say, I took the heroic route and climbed the mountain anyways!

All this to say: Great insight on the hero figure (me!), but you're wrong about the Olympics. (haha!) If you researched anything about the Olympics, you'll know that they look nothing like what you see in the photo. Try again!! :)

Okay...so after doing a little research...here is my guess. I believe that the mountains in this picture are the Cascade mountains in Washington State. As already stated, the man in the picture is Mr. Inouye. And as to why it is on the American myth website, my thought process is much like Tiara's. I really like what you said Tiara about, 'the mountain as seemingly impossible and difficult as it may be to the average person but a hero is never just an average person'. (sorry i didn't quote it normally...still trying to figure out this website =] ). As we learned today in class, one big American myth is that as Americans, we believe nothing is impossible. In Columbus' letter, refering to conqueringthe islands, He said that he had succeded in 'victory over things apparently impossible'. Some might say that a person on crutches with a hurt ankle would never be able to climb a mountain; that it is impossible and preposterous. However, Mr Inouye you have proved them wrong. We have the power to create our own destinies. We can do whatever seems impossible! (oh and by the way Mr. Inouye, I like the story of how you hurt your ankle...sounds like something I would do.) 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I'm not sure if Aimee is correct, but I believe that this was taken on Mount Rainier. One theme in American myth is overcoming challenges. I also like what Tiara and Aimee said about Mr. Inouye being the "hero" trying to do the impossible (climb a mountain on crutches). Some may not believe it, because it seems so extreme, which is why it makes it a myth. Do you find this valuable?

Good grief, Midori! You're 3 for 3!

Yes, it's ME and it's me on MT. RAINIER...

Why'd you guess Mt. R?

ok i read what every else put and it had me thinking. yes the picture is Mr.Inouye and was taken on Mount Rainier. Now the hard part how does this goes with an American myth. i don't know if agree with him been a "Hero". The American Myth when your hurt you can't do certain things. However in Mr. Inouye case he is overcome that myth and sayin YES I CAN which ties into another myth. Which state that we can do anything we put our mind to.

I have been thinking very long and hard about this one as you can tell! I believe that that the person in this picture is Mr.I as stated, and that the mountans are those of Mount Rainer. I believe this is american myth, because it shows how one of our big american myths is freedom. Here in America we are lucky enough to be free and have the freedom of whatever it is (speech, etc.). Also, this picture sort of reminds me of last year's english class when we learned about the journey of a hero. It looks as if you are traveling down a long road and will be facing many obstacles, but eventually, you will get through it. These american myths about freedom and journey of a hero really apply to this photo. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
